SMART SEDIMENT TRAP

Ringlet lake is having issues on erosions, rubbish dumping and uncontrolled farming due to insufficient catchment management. Integrated Lake Basin Management (ILBM) is a conceptual framework for assisting Lake Basin managers and stakeholders in achieving sustainable management of lakes and their basins. It integrates institution, policy, participation, information, technology and funding as part of the component of the ILBM.

One of the physical alternatives to control sediment at source are sediment trap system at the crucial site. The concrete sediment trap constructed at Sg Habu consists of inlet, three compartments of sediment basin and outlet of the structure. Each compartments function differently as a complete system. The sediment basin were constructed using concrete as main materials. The purpose of sediment trap system is to reduce sediments inflow into reservoir.

Sedimentation problem occurs around the world with different rate. Rapid rate of sedimentation could cause damage and interrupt process flow. As example, sedimentation had cause low storage capacity at TNB’s dams which in turn affected the operation of the dam.

Key Features & Benefits

  • Comprehensive solution to manage and control sedimentation at source

  • Designed to trap solid waste and sediment at various particle size

  • Constructed at source in order to control and decrease sedimentation rate

Potential applications

  • The sediment trap can be installed at source within watershed area

  • The installation of sediment trap at source of sediment contributor will help reduce sedimentation problem at all reservoir in Malaysia
